Cutting Stained Glass Using Hand Cutter

Short video on cutting stained glass from a template using a traditional glass cutter.

Using Sal Ammoniac Block to Clean Soldering Iron

  • Use a well ventilated area.
  • Take time with iron on full heat.
  • Turn tip and add 60/40 solder to tin.
  • A little flux helps with process.

Finish of a Leaded Stained Glass Window

Using 50/50 solder and natural bristle brushes is the trick.

Cement (putty) is a simple formula.

  • Aluminum glazing compound (link below).
  • Cut with mineral spirits to thin and mix with paint mixer on drill.
  • Add whiting to thicken back up

Do not wash leaded panel prior to cementing. (Flux residue actually helps give a nice even patina.)

Apply cement with natural bristle brush working into lead.

Scrape loaded brush with putty knife to remove excess cement returning to cement bucket. let set for 20-30 minutes and follow up with cleaned brush (same brush in 1st step) to fine tuned cement amounts. Let front dry over night and use fid or sharpened wooded stick (bamboo skewer) to edge cement to lead. Store brush inside cement bucket lying bristles down into putty mix.

Follow up with same brush that is now mostly void of soft cement and remove scrapped cement particles, if brush has putty on it scrape off with glazing knife to get clean as possible. Turn panel over and do back. No additional putty is needed because what seeped from front is enough to work into panel. A small amount of whiting may be used to clean up flux on back but most should work itself back into the cement while scrubbing.

Now ready to do the magic!

Flip back to front...

Take clean softer bristle brush (this is your polishing brush) and scrub it in!

Surface putty will be dry enough but still soft if you try to pick it out. Avoid pushing brush under leaves of lead.

Repeat on back.

Back to front spray lightly (light mist) of Pledge and rub some more with polishing brush until dry and shiny!

Whiting is in the mix so no powder cloud!

Whiting is also a mild abrasive and will shine up solder joints. Using 60/40 is worse yet. Stick with 50/50... Stays where you put it without dripping off lead crowns and blends nicer to lead (see video).
